William Russell Flint
Biography
Born in 1880 in Edinburgh. Died in 1969 aged 89.
He began his career as a medical illustrator and was also an artist for the Illustrated London News.
Best known for his watercolours, he also did many drawings in chalk on tinted paper. Originals fetch over £100,000 for reclining female watercolour studies.
His ability to communicate his sensitive feelings for beauty in all things, his skill and craftsmanship make him one of the most popular artists of all time. Many see him as the finest watercolour artist of this century. Highly prolific, he covered a large range of subject matter, locations and techniques. He was a sensitive landscape painter and not just a student of the figure. The landscapes he painted are of provincial France and not Spain as is popularly believed.
Whilst Russell Flint was living all his limited edition prints were signed. Since his death in 1969, through permission of his Estate, limited edition prints are still being published but obviously without his signature. His daughter-in-law is now publishing his work and two editions are being released each year. The older signed prints do not necessarily fetch higher prices than the more recent unsigned limited edition prints on the secondary market.
